Formed
in 1997, BBEG seeks to provide a Jewish perspective on environmental issues and
a Jewish voice in the wider environment-concerned community. We are a committed group who work actively in
the environment preservation sphere. We have regularly participated in annual events such as Clean Up Australia and Plant Trees for Parks Victoria.
We have:
·
organised Eco tours of sites
such as CERES, French Island Permaculture Farm, the “Green Building”, household
waste recycling facilities & water treatment plants and have speakers
active in the field address us at our meetings.
·
supported the Port Phillip Ecocentre,
both financially and with workers.
·
set up recycling bins for
corks, batteries, spectacles, hearing aids, mobile phones, compact fluorescent
light globes and hotel give-aways (soap, shampoo etc.)
· had calico bags specially made to our own design, and sold
2000 of them to encourage people to use fewer plastic bags
As foundation
members of the Jewish Ecological Coalition inc. (JECO) we have played a leading
role in organising Jewish Eco-Festivals in 2004 & 2005.
We meet monthly in private homes. Our “thought for the month” stimulates us to
notice articles on environmental issues and report them to the group, and we
have also sought to educate ourselves on the Halachic perspective on the
environment.
