Raoul Wallenberg Unit was instituted in 1985, and has grown to be a
cohesive group of some 150 members.
The Unit awards study grants to secondary
teachers to attend seminars at Yad Vashem in Israel (via Pauline Glass
Study Grants), and sponsors and Courage to Care.
Celebrating 25 years since establishment, Raoul Wallenberg’s 150 members
can participate in regular meetings, Fellowship Concerts for the
elderly, book discussions, volunteering for Josie’s Opportunity Shop,
heritage evenings, musical appreciation, and a range of outdoor
activities.
Raoul Wallenberg Unit also supports other community
entities, including Emmy Monash Home for the Aged, Montefiore/Jewish
Care, Jewish Education Board, Fellowship Concerts, Israel Commission and
various disaster funds.
The Unit was founded with the special purpose of disseminating the
account of the noble and heroic work of Raoul Wallenberg, who saved many tens of thousands of the Jews of Hungary
in 1944, and also of those non-Jewish women and men who acted as he
did, in other parts of Europe whilst it was under Nazi rule.
We have instituted the Raoul Wallenberg Humanitarian Award, which has
been presented to distinguished citizens in honour of their outstanding
humanitarian work. The most recent award was to Sir Gustav Nossal, in
April 2006.
