Unit Akiba members are generally in the age range of mid 60s to early 70s. Meetings are held every month and usually take place in the members' homes. These meetings involve a wide range of activities. Some are purely social, but others include lectures given by members on topics chose by the Unit's Jewish Cultural Enrichment Program (JCEP), which in 2017 and 2018 has focused on Jewish 'giants'. Other Unit activities include having guest artists perform in people's homes, or going out as a group to theatre or art shows. There are also fundraising events such as trivia quiz nights. One of the members runs a Jewish non-fiction book club which is widely promoted within the Unit. Sunday morning walks are organised twice a year as are day-time outings to various places of interest in Melbourne. There are also annual weekends away.
While the Unit's functions are based on what the majority of members want to do, the group is conscious of the need to support the less well off, and funds are raised each year for various charities which are chosen by the members. The Unit also regularly donates money to charities in Israel and does so via the B'nai B'rith Israel Commission. Members also volunteered their time to supporting Impact for Women, Courage to Care and other community services.
There are over 55 members in Akiba at present and new ones are warmly welcomed.
