Fostering Social Connections and Alleviating Loneliness

Recently highlighted in the media is the concerning prevalence of what experts are labelling a “loneliness epidemic,” particularly affecting older members of our community. While B’nai B’rith remains steadfast in its commitment to execute impactful projects and programs, it is noteworthy that a growing number of newer members are seeking to join primarily for the invaluable social connections fostered within the B’nai B’rith community.

A significant proportion of B’nai B’rith’s membership comprises individuals aged 60 and above. These individuals embody vibrancy, activity, passion, and compassion, making substantial contributions not only to the community at large but also to one another. Their significance extends beyond being just friends; they form a robust support network, akin to an extended family. They travel together, educate one another, and offer solace in times of need, such as during illnesses or the passing of a partner.

As the CEO of B’nai B’rith Victoria and a member of a younger generation than the current cohort, Ellana Aarons has had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the profound advantages of membership. “I have seen how they rallied around each other through COVID lockdowns, visit each other in illness, and care for a spouse when their partner is unwell or has passed away. Importantly, the culture within our membership ensures that no one experiences loneliness.”

B’nai B’rith members are presented with a plethora of opportunities each month, ranging from engaging talks delivered by intriguing speakers to participation in book clubs, visits to museums, dinners, live theatre, and much more. For those seeking deeper involvement, committee meetings and planning sessions offer a way to actively shape the organisation’s trajectory.

The choice within B’nai B’rith is yours; you can opt to relish the benefits of the array of opportunities or take a more active role by participating in committees or even spearheading new projects.

It is inherent in our neurobiology to yearn for social connections, and B’nai B’rith effectively addresses this need for the elder members of our community. It’s well-established that maintaining robust relationships and curbing loneliness confer significant health advantages.

We extend an invitation to you to connect with B’nai B’rith, learn more about our diverse event offerings, and explore how to become a valued member of our organisation.
