B’nai B’rith Sydney Unit 1546, originally known as B’nai B’rith Sydney Lodge was founded by German and Austrian refugees fleeing Europe and the Holocaust and arriving in Australia. In an effort to recreate all that was lost during the war years, Sydney Lodge was established as the first B’nai B’rith entity in December 1944. Following the merger of Sydney Lodge (men), Sydney Chapter (women) and Masada Unit, Sydney Unit 1546 was instituted in 2007.
Some of our current members have a long association with B’nai B’rith as the original Sydney Lodge Charter members.
Today, B’nai B’rith Sydney Unit 1546 is a small and proud group of Jewish Seniors from all walks of life. While age prevents us from actively engaging in ‘hands on’ activities, age is no barrier to enjoying being a member to uphold the principles and ideals of B’nai B’rith.
Our overarching purpose is to encourage socialisation and companionship with other like-minded seniors to come together at bi-monthly meetings, to hear interesting guest speakers and participate in outings of interest.
Over the years the Unit has donated to many Jewish and non-Jewish local and overseas causes, as well as more major donations through our B’nai B’rith Sydney Lodge Charitable Trust, providing financial assistance for Jewish Education, Jewish Continuity, support to Israel and other B’nai B’rith Projects.
Our meetings are held in a venue in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney, which is close to public transport.
We seek and wish to invite people to join the Unit and continue the long traditions of B’nai B’rith – Engage Connect Belong.
