Members of Sydney’s broad community came together recently for a Havdalah Dinner – A Celebration of Unity, an evening dedicated to strengthening communal bonds and reflecting on the values that unite us.
Almost 200 people attended the dinner to mark the conclusion of Shabbat through the Havdalah ceremony before sharing a meal and lively conversation about the challenges facing Australia. Guests enjoyed hora dancing with music by Chutney, many remarking on the event’s warm and inclusive atmosphere.
Jointly organised by B’nai B’rith NSW and Allies for a Strong Australia, the evening was conceived as an opportunity to create space for connection at a time when division feels louder than ever.
“The Havdalah ceremony marks the transition from one week to the next and reminds us of the importance of bringing light, hope and purpose into our daily lives,” said John Szabo, President of B’nai B’rith NSW. “We wanted to create an event that celebrated not only our shared traditions but also the strength that comes from coming together as one community.”
Among those in attendance were Federal MP Matt Thistlethwaite, Greens councillor Fabiano Ludovico and Colonel Michael Scott, underscoring the evening’s message that mutual understanding can transcend political and professional boundaries.
“The music, the dancing and the singing was amazing,” said Cr Ludovico Fabiano.
Organisers noted that while the event centred on the Havdalah ritual, its broader purpose was to encourage relationships, dialogue and a sense of communal responsibility.
“We had a wonderful evening bringing Jewish, Christian and other Australians together to celebrate our shared values and traditions,” said Mark Leach, co-Founder and CEO of Allies for a Strong Australia. “There’s nothing like good food, music, and laughter to bring encouragement and joy to a community!”
Following the great success, organisers are exploring additional opportunities for similar community events in the months ahead.
The Havdalah Dinner Celebration of Unity forms part of ongoing efforts to further an inclusive and connected Jewish Australian community, grounded in shared values, mutual respect and a commitment to the collective wellbeing.
