B’nai B’rith NSW today announces the formation of a community Quilting Bee, a special volunteer-led initiative to create commemorative quilts to honour the extraordinary first responders from the recent Bondi terror attack.
This collaborative effort is a symbol of gratitude and healing, paying tribute to the courage of members from the South Bondi Surf Life Saving Club and North Bondi Surf Life Saving Club, who ran toward danger to save lives during the tragic events of 14 December 2025.
The Quilting Bee will bring together some of the community’s best stitchers to create handcrafted quilts, which will be presented to the North and South Bondi Surf Life Saving Clubs to auction and raise funds for their organisations.
“We wanted to turn our creativity into something meaningful — making quilts to raise funds for Bondi Surf Club and North Bondi Surf Life Saving Club as a heartfelt thank you for their incredible courage and selflessness during the Bondi tragedy,” said Karen Sayer, co-organiser. “It’s our way of stitching gratitude into something tangible.”
The Bondi terror attack affected countless individuals and the wider community, with first responders providing immediate care in extremely challenging circumstances. From lifeguards acting as first responders before emergency services arrived, to surf lifesavers converting club facilities into makeshift aid stations, their efforts were pivotal in saving lives and stabilising the injured.
The quilting group launch event will take place on 16 February and is seeking applications from skilled sewers, appliqué artists and embroiderers. Community members interested in contributing to this special project are invited to submit an expression of interest by emailing council@bbnsw.org.au
