In a significant cultural development for B’nai B’rith NSW, Dr Hilton Immerman OAM has launched a 5-part lecture series titled ‘The Representation of the Jew in English Literature.’ This course is exploring how Jews have been portrayed by non-Jewish writers throughout English literary history, providing a critical examination of Jewish characters and themes from medieval times to the present day.
Dr. Hilton Immerman OAM is a respected expert with a distinguished record in scholarship and community service. His deep knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject offers valuable insights into how Jewish identities and experiences have been portrayed and evolved in literary texts.
The lecture series includes works by major literary figures such as Geoffrey Chaucer and William Shakespeare, as well as more contemporary authors. Participants will engage with a variety of texts, exploring how these representations reflect historical attitudes and societal changes.
Immerman’s lecture series aims to foster a deeper understanding of the ways in which literature can both shape and reflect cultural perceptions. By examining the often complex and varied portrayals of Jewish characters, the course provides a nuanced perspective on the historical and literary forces that have influenced these depictions.
The inaugural lecture series has sold out, but don’t worry—there will be a second series starting in November 2024 for those who want to join in. Visit www.bnaibrith.org.au/nsw/events/ for more information.
